The cold months are almost over, warmer monts are upon us and it seems people should be getting healthier.  Instead emergency rooms around the country are bracing for the “second wave” of this year’s flu season, as well as preparing for the possibility of more cases of the newly emerged Coronavirus. Even without this new disease, and the seasonal flu, during these winter months your body could also be experiencing a decrease in Vitamin D, and other essential nutrients needed to maintain a healthy immune system. Vitamin D levels decline in the winter months with their lowest levels experienced in March, which coincidentally coincides with the “second wave” of the seasonal flu. National Influenza Vaccination Week

Did you know that flu cases in San Diego this year have already doubled compared to this time last year? This means that more people in San Diego are getting sick, with that number expected to rise during the holiday season. That is why the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes the week of December 1st as National Influenza Vaccination Week. During these seven days, the CDC reminds everyone six months or older about the importance of getting their flu vaccine and encourages anyone that has not received one to do so.

This flu shot vaccine reminder comes after a particularly intense flu season last year, which sent more than 30,000 people to the hospital, and resulted in 329 deaths in California, and killed 171 children nationwide — the highest number recorded in any non-pandemic year since 2004 when the CDC began tracking pediatric deaths. To properly protect yourself this flu season, the CDC recommends that all adults and children older than six months be vaccinated by the end of October 2018.
